Sophia Chapadjiev is a writer whose work has been performed in New York, London, Toronto and Sydney.

Her librettos have featured as part of NYC’s Opera Fest, American Opera Projects, New York University, and Symphony Space. Sophia's opera, The Bone Keepers (music: C. O’Neil), inspired by Brooklyn’s Fort Greene Park and the Revolutionary War has been described as “a kind of creep show meets Laverne and Shirley” and mentioned as a “favorite” in Broadway World’s opera review. In 2020, her opera, Minutes to Midnight (music: J. Sturt), had its avant première at London’s Tête à Tête Festival where it was championed as “an extraordinary work of vivid contrasts”.

As a lyricist and book writer, Sophia’s musicals have appeared off-Broadway and off-off Broadway (HERE Arts Center, York Theatre, Players Theatre, American Theatre of Actors). She has had a residency at Goodspeed Opera House and her short musical, Tobias Bentley’s World Cello Tour (of the Lesser-Known Nether Regions) (music: N. Barstow), was presented at the St. James (nka The Other Palace) in London.

Sophia's play, Over the Moon, won Best Play, plus Audience Favorite at the American Globe Theater in New York. In London, her play, In This House, was selected for the inaugural Dark Horse Festival. Sophia’s work as a playwright has also appeared onstage at the West End’s Criterion Theatre as part of their New Writing Programme.

As an educator, Sophia has been a core teaching-artist of various NYC organizations, while also being a lead facilitator of professional development workshops. Additionally, she has taught script analysis at the National Theater Institute. Since 2007, she has been the Artistic Director for the Young Playwrights Festival at the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center in Connecticut. Sophia is the author of Teaching Playwriting: A Step-by-Step Guide to Fostering Young Playwrights.

She has a BFA from Boston’s Emerson College and a Masters in musical theater writing from New York University. Originally from Chicago, Sophia now divides her time between the US and the UK.
